What can I do when I am on the Internet? How do I setup an email account, forward, send attachments, such as documents or pictures? How to get answers to questions? How do I keep myself safe when "surfing the Net?" This class will help you discover answers to the questions and provide you with basic work-ready Internet and email skills.

Learn to use your iDevice (iPad/iPhone)

Did you buy, or are planning to buy, an Apple iPad? Are you finding it a little frustrating to use? Even if you own an iPhone rather than an iPad, you will find most of the topics applicable and useful. In this course you will learn basic iPad controls (swipes, pinches, etc.), some shortcuts, and how to use key features, including the camera and how to enhance photos. You will learn how to get pictures and documents into and out of your iPad, so you can share them with others. As useful as they are, the applications (apps), supplied with the iPad don't even scratch the surface of what is available. You will learn to download and use third-party apps. These include general purpose apps, and apps that help you take better iPad photos and videos, and then edit and enhance them. You will also learn how to copy photos from your digital camera to your iPad. The class includes online handouts, demonstrations, and in-class exercises.

Five weeks to master your own digital camera! Learn operations, take photos, and review them on the computer, while learning both point-and shoot, and manual settings. Create photos you'll want to keep and share.

One-Stroke Painting

Learn this popular painting technique that shades, highlights, and blends all in one stroke of your brush. Paint gifts for family and friends or something special for your home. With this fun, quick, and easy technique you can paint on glass, wood, tin, fabric, furniture, and even on walls. You don't have to be an artist, and it's for people of all ages.

 

Tole Painting

Come learn the basics of Tole Painting which has been around since the 1800s. It's a form of decorative painting that anyone can learn and can be applied to many different surfaces, such as wood and tin. Written instructions, a photo of the finished project, along with the pattern, are provided. Instructor guides you step by step with instruction on how to prepare your surface, transfer your pattern, and how to protect your painting once it's completed. All levels are welcome. No painting experience is necessary. Supplies will be discussed the first day of class.

 

Oil Painting

Under the supervision of the teacher, students use basic principles and techniques of oil painting, learn basic composition, color theory, and various other oil painting, learn basic composition, color theory, and various other oil painting ideologies and practices. Themes include: floral, seascape, landscape, still life, portraits, and other painting topics. Students provide their own tools and supplies.

Parent Education

 

When registering, the student information should be about the ADULT student. This includes the ADULT name and the ADULT birthdate of the ADULT coming to class. An adult MUST come to class with the child.

Parenting the Infant

This class is for parents with babies, (newborn to 18 months), and covers body fitness exercises, relaxation techniques, growth, and development. Parents enter parenthood with confidence and good parenting skills. Novice parents learn to relax and enjoy their new role, while babies happily reap the lovng benefits.

 

Parenting the Two-Year Old

Parents of two-year olds participate in activities designed to promote positive learning experiences. This course encourages the understanding of the ages and stages of normal growth and development. Topics of discussion include discipline, sharing, weaning, toilet training, language development, and sleeping habits.

 

Parenting the Toddler

Parents and toddlers, (12 to 24 months old), share a special time together as they eagearly explore the classroom activities designed specifically for this age. These lively children grow rapidly in physical and verbal abilities, and parents learn and discuss the important physical and social changes occurring. Helping parents to understand and accept each child as a unique and special individual is an important focus of this class.

 

Parenting the Pre-Schooler

Parents and their pre-schoolers, (ages 2 1/2 to 5), engage in quality enrichment activities including art, music, and games, with a major emphasis on communication and cooperation skills. Adult discussion addresses physical and social development, as well as teaching techniques that encourage positive behaviors. Parents take time to play, laugh, and share with their child during these important years of childhood development.

 

Focus on Music Plus

This expanded program includes music and movement activities using various instruments and other accessories. Additionally, the parent and child engage in story time, art time, and outside play time specifically designed to encourage curiosity and interest. This class promotes listening skills, following directions, and body awareness.

 

Focus on Art

Together, parents and children (ages 2 to 5) engage in creative self-expression through multimedia art projects, interactive songs, and the development of large and small motor skills. As childeren explore their world through art, they practice observation techniques and learn to use fine motor skills to show what they see and know. This ability to express through art positively enhances the child's self-image.

Understanding Medicare & the Impact of ACA

Confused about Medicare as well as how health care legislation has affected it? Wondering how choices may become more limited (doctors, hospitals, treatments0? How Social Security changes may impact your planning? This class includes a general overview of how these government programs work, how one qualifies, key enrollment windows, benefit options, and monthly costs including new income thresholds. Also covered will be Medicare Advantage Plans (e.g. Kaiser, SCAN, etc.), Supplemental Plans, Part D drug plans, and legislated changes to them. You may also be able to apply to an Exchange plan if you are over 65 and not qualified for Medicare. Note: Medicaid / Medical are being expanded through the Exchanges plan. Information on resources & tools to assist you in your decision making will be provided, including an online demo about choosing the right health care plan. Notary Public Course (California)

California needs additional professional notaries! This class provides the new or previously commissioned Notary Public with the education and skills to pass the state examination, detect fraud, and be successful in a new career. There is a growing need for Notaries Public in the expanding financial, real estate, business, and law professions. The State Certification test will be given immediately following this class. Bring a seperate $40 check or money order (no cash or credit card) payable to the Secretary of State, a 2"x2" color passport photo, a #2 pencil, and a sack lunch. California driver's license or identification card required.

Stock Market (Beginning)

Fundamentals of investing will be introduced. Strategies to be discussed include stocks, bonds, money market funds, mutual funds, international stocks, and methods for implementing a personal investment portfolio. Topics such as earning more from CDs, maximizing return in IRA investments will also be presented.

This course offers a more advanced presentation of stock market trading techniques. Class will focus on the evaluation and understanding of stock charts, sector investing, hedging for the individual investor, closed and listed funds, and how to find values in a speculative market.

Loan Signing-Notary Public Seminar

California's real estate industry needs notaries who would like to become Loan Document Signing Specialists. In this class your instructor will present information, duties and responsibilities of the Notary Public entering the loan industry as a Loan Document Signing Specialists. Please bring a valid driver's license, and a #2 pencil. Prerequisite: Must have, or be in the process of obtaining, a California State Notary Public license.

Guitar (Beginning/Intermediate)

Beginners learn the basic techniques and simple songs. Intermediate students focus on more advanced techniques and apply them to songs. Students must furnish their own guitar to participate in class.

 

Learn to Play the Ukulele

The ukulele is an instrument beloved by those who enjoy Hawaiian music. Students in this course learn simple chords, strums, and plucking patterns. The techniques will be applied to fun, simple songs. All students must bring their own "tuneable" ukulele and only soprano, concert or tenor size to participate in the class.

 

Physical Fitness & Dance

 

Low-Impact Aerobics (Intermediate)

This low-impact aerobic class emphasizes a warm-up, light aerobics, stretching, balance, and strength building. Exercises are done standing and seated with some floor work. Students should be able to stand and sit without assistance. Bring mat and weights.


Muscle Strenghtening (Intermediate)

Learn safe and proper techniques for upper and lower body strengthen the back, assist with balance, and avoid bone loss. Students use free weights, elastic bands, and other equipment to enhance strength building. A chair aerobic routine is included.


Fitness Difference for Seniors (Intermediate)

Join the fun! Class emphasizes movements for particular areas of the body. Exercises include strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, coordination, and body mechanics. Friday class features partner exercise, dancing, and more! Bring hand weights and a mat.


Cardio Salsa! (Beginning)

Cardio + Salsa + Merengue + Line Dancing = Fun! Learn the popular dances in the Latin beat. Add line dancing and swing and you have a dynamic cardio workout! Stretching and cool down exercises are included. Wear comfortable shoes for dancing.


Cardio Salsa! (Intermediate)

Engage in an aerobic workout while learning new dance steps and routines for physical fitness and performance. Learn the latest Latin dances: Salsa, Cha-Cha, Merengue, and Bachata. Update your Western Line-Dance routines, swing, and ballroom dance steps. This class is for those who have taken beginning Cardio Salsa or who have some experience in Latin or ballroom dance. Partners are not necessary. Warm-up and cool-down stretches are included. Wear comfortable shoes for dancing.


T'ai Chi-Qi Gong (Level 1)

Increase your strength, endurance, balance, and stress resilience. Learn various ancient Chinese Qi Gong exercises and the first part of the T'ai Chi Chu'an long form. Students must be able to stand throughout the class. Wear athletic shoes with a low grip.


T'ai Chi-Qi Gong (Level 2)

The Level 2 class is open to students who have taken the Level 1 Beginning class and are interested in continuing their practice of Qi Gong and T'ai Chi Chu'an Short Form. The class is designed to improve strength, balance, focus, and relaxation. Students are supported in cultivating life forece energy and incresing the flow of "chi" throughout the body. New postures will be added to the Yang Style Short Form sequence. Previously learned postures will be refined and reviewed. Students will be standing throughout the class. Wear low-grip shoes.


T'ai Chi-QI Gong (Level 3)

The Level 3 class is for students who have completed the Level 2 Intermediate class and are interested in continuing their practice of Qi Gong and T'ai Chi Chu'an. Students will deepen their skills in cultivating life forces energy and increasing the flow of "chi" throughout the body. The T'ai Chi Chu'an Short Form will be reviewed. New postures of the Yang Style Long Form will be introduced and practiced.


T'ai Chi-QI Gong (Level 4)

The Advanced Level 4 class is for students who have completed the Level 3 Intermediate class and are interested in mastering various forms of Yang Style T'ai Chi Ch'uan and continuing their Qi Gong practice. Students will be supported in deepening their skills in cultivating life force energy and increasing the flow of "chi" throughout the body. Attention will be given to continous refinement of the Yang Style Short Form, Long Form and Fast Forms.


Yoga-Gentle Yoga

Yoga brings mind, body, and spirit together as one. Students learn basic postures for strength and agility. Gentle stretching exercises are included for building flexibiity. Breathing and relaxation techniques help improve focus and concentration.

 

Yoga- Level 1

Students learn classic yoga positions (asanas) with varying levels of difficulty. The focus is to continue to build balance, strength, and agility. Relaxation and breathing techniques are included.

 

Yoga- Level 2

This class is for students who have had previous training in yoga. It includes a progression of classic positions that may increase in difficulty to develop strength, stamina, and flexibility. Relaxation and breathing techniques are included.

 

Chair Yoga

Get the benefits of yoga in a class designed just for you. Yoga fitness exercises will be adapted to a seated position in a chair. Breathing, stretching, and relaxation techniques will be included. Gain greater flexibility, strength, and confidence from this new approach to the ancient science of yoga. Primarily seated exercises. Standing exercises are optional.

 

Yoga for Physical Fitness (Beginning)

Practice various yoga poses to improve your flexibility, balance, and strength. In coordination with deep breathing, increase your mental calmness, heighten body awareness, and reduce stress.

Practice various yoga poses for flexibility, balance, strength, mental calmness, body awareness, and stress reduction. This class is designed to be a notch up in intensity from the beginning class.

 

T'ai Chi

T'ai Chi Chuan is a slow-motion exercise program for relaxation and health. Learn the history, philosophy, and the basic moves of this ancient art for modern people. T'ai Chi is excellent exercise for stress reduction and relaxation. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing.

 

Reiki: Balance Your Energy & Balance Your Life

Each day seems to bring more stress until we feel out of control with no "down" time, resulting in negative health issues. Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive way to get "back on track." This informational lecture provides a basic understanding of Reiki. Techniques will be demonstrated and class ends with a guided meditation.

 

Pilates

Pilates is a series of controlled exercises that condition the total body and mind, blending strength and flexibility. The course will teach students to improve their over all posture, create more long and lean muscles without bulking up, utilize proper breathing and form for exercises, be able to control their "powerhouse" i.e. abdominal and back core muscles. As a result, students will improve overall fitness, flexibility, and endurance.

 

Aerobic Exercise-Over 40 Shape-Up

No matter what shape you are in now, this is the place to improve your fitness level, stamina, strength, and muscle tone. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or towel.

 

Get Fit Fast

This individualized fitness program is designed to assisst students in understanding how to assess their own personal muscular weakness, provide exercises and movements for their personal strengthening, use their own body weight (no equipment or apparatus necessary), and "tweak" movements for their particular needs. Students also learn how to adjust movements from beginning to intermediate, and intermediate to advanced. Class is taught by a certified personal trainer with over 14 years of experience.

 

Walk for Health

Walk your way to better health along our beautiful coastline in this walking class specifically designed for seniors. Warm-up and cool down exercises are a part of each session. After registering, students meet at Miramar Park (at the corner of Miramar & Paseo de la Playa). No pets allowed.

 

Line Dance (Beginner)

Learn the basics of Line Dancing, by doing easy dances. You will learn the step patterns for dances including: Cowboy Hustle, Strait Cha Cha, Waltz Across Texas, Black Velvet, and many more. No partners necessary. Dress casual and have fun!

 

Lince Dance (Improver)

After learning the basics, move up to the next level of line dancing. Dances you will learn include: Tush Push, Watermelon Crawl, Boot Scootin' Boogie, and some newer dances. No partners necessary. Dress casual and have fun!

 

Zumba!

The next best thing to being at Carnival! Dance off the fat and flab to a sizzling Latin rhythm in an upbeat atmosphere. You've seen the ads on TV, so what ar you waiting for? Come join us at the dance party! Students will progress at their own pace. Bring water and wear exercise apparel.

 

Strength & Cardio Intervals for Body Scult & Fitness

This total body workout, if done consistently, increases muscle strength bone density, lean body mass, metabolism, improves coordination, and balance. All major muscle groups are engaged with the use of hand weights and floor exercises. Dance-like cardio intervals are performed to lively, motivating music to elevate the heart rate and burn calories. Get a total body workout while having fun! Includes mat exercises for abs and a stretching and cool-down period to relax the muscles and mind. Bring a mat and hand weights (3-5 lbs.). Wear loose clothing and athletic shoes.

 

Finish Your First 5K

Train in a supportive enviornment with fellow beginners. Receive guidance from an experienced Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) certified running coach who will inspire you to achieve your goals. Each session inlcudes classroom time to focus on the mental side of training, followed by a group walk/run in adjacent Wilson Park. The "final exam" for class members will be the annual Torrance Turkey Trot Run/Walk (Registration for this event is not included in the class fee).

Celebrities do it. Politicians do it. Why don't you? Write your life story only you know. Neither good grammar nor writing experience is necessary; memories are what count. Help preserve history by creating a family treasure. The experienced teacher makes it fun.

This course is designed to ensure that individuals are well-prepared for the workplace. It provides a new set of competencies and a foundation to enjoy a full and productive life. Introduction to Fly Fishing

NOTE: NO actual fishing will be a part of this introductory class. Discover the enjoyment of catching trout on a fly. You will learn the basic techniques of fly-fishing, what equipment is essential, how to select this equipment, basic casting skills, why there are so many different flies and how they relate to the trout's source of food, and how to read the water to determine the most likely areas to find fish.

 

Floral Design-Basic

Enhance basic floral designs with artistic style and flair. Let colorful seasonal textures and fragrances inspire you to create a special fresh flower arrangement for your home, gifts, holidays, and events. Stundents provide flowers, some tools and supplies.

 

Floral Design-Intermediate/Advanced

This class features floral elements in trendy configurations with unusual materials and creative containers. Each semester celebrates the colors and themes of the season. Students provide flowers, some tools, and supplies.

 

Bone Health Made Easy

Discover easy and very powerful approaches to improved bone health and bone density. Get a clearer and better understanding of the terms used, better lifestyle options, and easier, earlier, and more frequent monitoring methods. Learn about appropriate measures of bone health outside of medication. Principles and techniques discussed are used by NASA!

 

Coil Basketry

This is an introductory coil basketry workshop using a traditional coiling technique. Each basket maker will learn the necessary skills to create a coiled basket from start to finish: how to begin a coil, shaping it into its own unique vessel, and finishing it off. In this particular workshop, paper twine will be used for the core and a variety of colorful yarns for wrapping. No experience is needed.

Embark on a stand-up comedy career! Make your presentations and tweets funnier! Write articles with snappy sound bites! Whatever your goals of communication, the improved skill of writing and performing with better humor will drastically improve how you convey information.

 

Home Repair Series

 

Basic Homeowners Plumbing Hands-On class

Want to save money and water? Is that old kitchen faucet outdated and dripping? What really goes on inside of the toilet tank? Can I replace my water heater myself? These and other plumbing repairs will be explored in this "hands-on" class. Safety, tools, and building codes will also be discussed. Bring your own "plumbing problems" and leave knowing how to fix them yourself. No experience or prior knowledge required to participate in the class.

 

Basic Homeowners Electrical Hands-on class

Open to all levels, no prior electrical knowledge required. What do circuit breakers actually do? Why do lights dim when the air conditioner comes on? What is the proper way to add an extra outlet in the bedroom? Bring ALL your electrical questions to this class to find the correct answers. Electric theory, electric building codes, proper tools and wiring methodology along with actual hands on wiring practice will help you keep your house safe!

Gamble House & Historic Arroyo Terrace Neighborhood

Our day starts with a docent-led tour of the Gamble House in Pasadena. This outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture was designed by architects Charles and Henry Greene for David and Mary Gamble of the Proctor & Gamble Company. Please wear broad-heeled, flat shoes to protect the home's floors and rugs. Heels must be at least tow (2'' in width). Slippers will be provided if shoes do not meet the requirement. You will have time for browsing and lunch on your own in Old Pasadena. Then we will enjoy a gudided walk around the historic Arroyo Terrace neighborhood. This National Register historic district is home to nine Greene and Greene houses as well as the work of other noted architects. When your day is over, you will wish you had an Arts and Crafts house.

 

Annie Get Your Gun & Americana at Brand

We'll be stopping first at the Americana at Band, a premiere "shoppertainment" destination. There will be time for lunch on your own at one of the restaurants there and browsing in the shops. Next is the Glendale Centre Theatre, a unique theater in the round where our lively musical will be "Annie Get Your Gun." It's the story of Annie Oakley and Frank Butler, two of the West's greatest sharp shooters. They compete against each other but eventually fall in love. The production is filled with some of Irving Berlin's greatest hits such as "There's No Business Like Show Business", "They Say It's Wonderful", "Anything You Can Do", and more. You're going to love this show.
