Adult Literacy & High School Education

 

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

 

Online, Walk-ins, Fax, and Mail Registration does not apply to the Adult Literacy and High School Diploma programs.

Contact the office at (310) 533-4689 ext. 8400 for an appointment as a new student, a returning student, and/or for more information regarding the High School Equivalency Exams (GED® or HiSet™). New students must meet with the counselor for placement and development of an academic career plan. Students whose native language is not English must complete Advanced ESL or its equivalent prior to enrolling in literacy or High School courses.

 

*Please Note: Morning childcare is available at the Hamilton Center in Room 2 for children ages 2 - 5 when the parent is registered for classes.

 

Exams & Preparations

 

 

1.) College Entrance-SAT/ACT Exam Preparation

Princeton Review offers a quality SAT/ACT preparation course at Torrance Adult School for a discounted price. 18 hours of classroom instruction and 16 hours of testing provides students with intense preparation for the SAT/ACT College Entrance Exam.

3.) NEW! High School Equivalency (HSE) Math Preparation Course

Torrance Adult School now offers a direct instruction GED®/HiSET™ Math preparation course. This 10-week course is designed to prepare students to pass the Math portion of the High School equivalency exam. The class meets two times per week and regular attendance is required. There is no fee for the course and students may repeat the course if needed. General Math Basic A or passing of a diagnostic test are prerequisites. Students will earn 5 elective credits upon completion.


 

4.) NEW! College Math Placement (CMP) Test Preparation

Torrance Adult School now offers a direct instruction college Math placement test preparation course. This 10-week course is designed to help students prepare for the college placement test. The class meets two times per week and regular attendance is required. There is no fee for the course and students may repeat the course if needed. When a class fills, students will be placed on a waitlist.


 

5.) NEW! High School Equivalency (HSE) English Language Arts (ELA) Preparation Course

Torrance Adult School now offers a direct instruction GED®/HiSET™ English Language Arts preparation course. This course prepares students to pass the ELA portion of the High School equivalency exam. Included in the class is an online computerized reading program designed to increase test taking reading skills and essay preparation for the exam's written response. There is no fee for the course and students may repeat the course if needed. The class meets two times per week and regular attendance is required.


 

High School Equivalency

 

1.) HiSet™

California has approved three tests for the High School Equivalency Exam: GED®, HiSET™, and TASC.

 

Torrance Adult School now offers the HiSET™ test in a paper-based format. The test consists of five subject areas. Each subject area test costs $45, or you may purchase the entire test for $199. Free advising and preparation courses are available.

 

Practice tests are also offered to help determine if you are ready to pass or need additional study preparation. Practice test fee is $25. Call Hamilton Adult Center for scheduling (310) 533-4689 ext. 8400.

2.) GED®

Torrance Adult School now offers the GED® exam. The test consists of four subject areas. Each subject area test costs $35. Students who wish to enroll need to do the following:

Testing is held at the Levy Adult Center. Students who have not passed a portion of the GED and wish to sign up for a review before re-testing may also contact us for information and pricing for the review at: (310) 533-4689 ext. 8400.


 

Online Courses

Work on your High School Diploma, enrichment, and/or exam preparation courses in the comfort of your own home. Courses include: Subject Remediation, High School Diploma requirements, as well as advanced courses. All exams must be completed on campus. Learning Centers

 

Language Arts Center

The Language Arts Center is an open enviornment where adults are provided opportunities for learning English language arts skills ranging from a non-reader level to competency based High School Diploma courses. Students are provided the basic language skills that integrate program standards for Adult Basic & Secondary Education.


The Adult Basic Education Program (ABE) located in the Language Arts Center is a literacy program that provides basic skills instruction in reading and writing. Students are provided computer assisted learning, individualized instruction, and independent study programs. ABE learners are taught basic reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking, and problem solving skills to become more successful and productive members of the community.


High School Diploma English Language Arts courses are also offered in the Language Arts Center. These are competency based courses designed to develop reading comprehension, literary analysis, and written composition. Courses are structured to develop and enhance analytical and critical thought processes as well as interpretative and evaluative skills.


Learning Center

Adult Secondary Education: High School Diploma, Enrichment Courses, and High School Equivalency Exam Preparation.

 

The Learning Center is a classroom enviornment that provides direct instruction in the area of Math and provides the opportunity for students to work independently and at their own pace in all other High School subjects. Students may enroll in classes required for a High School Diploma, enrichment, and/or preparation for the High School Equivalency Certificate (GED® or HiSET™). A credentialed teacher is available for all students who need assistance. General Math Basic A & Algebra 1A will meet two times per week & regular attendance is required.
